The line of the Greenwich Meridian is marked uniquely here by a broad, diagonal, metallic band across the ceiling of the foot tunnel which links Springbank and Fernbrook Road under Hither Green Railway Station. A thin red line through the centre of the band marks the course of the Meridian, up the walls and across the ceiling of the tunnel. The letters ‘W’ and ‘E’ indicate which is the west and which is the east side of the line. Further wording on the band in black lettering has ‘Meridian Line’ and ‘Longitude Zero’.
Sources suggest that the Meridian was marked here in this way in 1984 as part of the centenary celebrations for the Greenwich Meridian. The authority responsible for the marking may have been the Ordnance Survey.
