A nautically-themed monument marks the grave of Captain James Upham and the Upham family burial plot. A hawser is coiled around the bollard, the Upham name is placed on the base of the bollard, and an anchor is depicted on the pedestal base of the monument.
Captain Upham commanded ships on the Great Lakes. He began his career on Lake Huron sailing out of Lorain (Lorraine), Ohio. In 1862, he moved his family, by boat of course, to Saugatuck, Michigan continuing his career on Lake Michigan.
