I cannot count the number of times I have been here just to hike and enjoy the area. That led me to thinking – hey, why not a virtual hiking cache that hikers / Waymarkers can enjoy. If any of the tags are missing or you cannot find them, just email me the virtual question for that location. Bring a pen and paper to write down the items on the tags. That is all you need (well, except for the usual….water, bug spray, etc.). HAPPY HIKING!!

Email me the answers within 24 hours of posting your find. Please do not post the answers in your log. Thanks!

Also, I have an Expert GPS file available. Just email me. The file contains the Tag locations and a trail track.

Tag Clues:

Tag #1: When I was a kid I had building blocks that looked just like these! The first tag is attached to a vine on the back of the tree that is right near these huge cement blocks. If you cannot locate the tag, just count the blocks and let me know how many.

Tag #2: The second tag is located on the back side of the nearest fence post of the barbed wire fence nearby. Or, just approximate the height of this object and tell me what still remains on it.

Tag #3: This is the dead-end of Trail 1A and you are standing at a gate. Count the number of horizontal bars on the gate. Turn around and head back the way you came. On the back side of the 1st large moss covered tree on your left is the tag (attached to a piece of left over barbed wire).

Tag #4: The tag is located on the object and should be easy to find. Or, just tell me what letter of the alphabet this object is shaped like.

Tag #5: You are at a barbed wire fence at the end of Trail 2. The tag is attached to the first wooden fence post to your right as you are facing the field. If it’s missing or you cannot find it, just tell me what they are growing in the field.

Tag #6: The tag is on the backside attached to a vine of the beautiful large moss covered tree nearby. Or, if you cannot find the tag just tell me what the object is.

Trail Info:

From the trail head follow Trail 2. You are headed in a ENE direction. At about ½ mile you will cross the Alafia River. Shortly before the intersection of Trail 2 & 1 you will be heading ESE along the railroad tracks in a very flat area. At 1.1 miles you take Trail 1 and find Tag #1.

Trail 1 starts out SW, then WNW and then take a turn and runs directly South. At 1.6 miles in you will be at the intersection of the 1.3 mile Loop Trail. Take a right turn on the Loop Trail and enjoy a wonderful walk through the prairie. Tag #2 is at about the halfway point.

At the end of the loop trail take Trail 1A .You will be heading in a general East to ESE direction and eventually directly south to the southern boundary of the Preserve and the location of Tag #3. This is about the ½ way point at 3.9 miles.

Head back the way that you came for about a 10th of a mile and take the high road – Trail 3. This trail heads due North. It intersects with Trail 1A & 1B at 4.3 miles. Be careful here – the trail map shows a direct Northern route but in fact you will have to make a gentle right turn to remain on trail 3. At 4.5 miles turn right (East) on trail 7.

Along Trail 7 at 4.8 miles you will find Tag #4. Trail 7 heads in a general Easterly direction and then eventually heads North and intersects with Trail 2 at 5.2 miles and the location of Tag #5. This is the Eastern boundary of the preserve.

After you find Tag #5, follow trail 2 to the WNW along the railroad tracks for a 10th of a mile and the intersection of linear dead-end Trail 5. Follow Trail 5 in a WSW direction until it dead ends ( about ¼ mile). This is the location of Tag #6.

Head back out Trail 5 to Trail 2. Take Trail 2 back to the trailhead.
