St. Patrick's Parish was organized in 1850 on behalf of Irish Catholics who came to the area to build the New London and Northern Railroad. The first mass took place on September 8, 1850 at a local woolen mill. In 1870 the Diocese of Springfield was separated from the Diocese of Boston and the church became a mission church of the church at Palmer, MA. In 1878 the parish at Monson became an independent parish of the Diocese of Springfield. The deed for the land on which the church is located was signed on December 24, 1862. Construction of the church began in early 1863. The Gothic Revival style church was designed by Patrick Charles Keely and constructed by the Trainor Brothers using locally quarried Monson granite. (

The façade of the church features a tall square tower with a double door entrance reached by a set of steps. The entrance is set within a Gothic pointed arch. Above the window is a arched stained glass window, then a statue of Jesus within a niche, a belfry with louvered windows, and a clock. At the roof line are finials at each corner.
The main block of the church has a gable roof. The sides have two tiers separated by a slanted roof. Both tiers are six bays wide. The lower level is one bay wide with a single Gothic window facing the front. Auxiliary entrances occupies the first bay of the lower levels with Gothic stained glass windows on each of the other five bays. Each bay on the upper level has a rectangular window.
