A stucco relief of the coat of arms of Pope John XXIII is located on north wing of St. Hyacinth Senior Friars Residents. Pope John XXIII was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli on November 25, 1881 in Bergamo, then the Kingdom of Italy. His papal coat of arms utilizes the Roncalli family coat of arms with the addition of the symbol for the Patriarch of Venice where he served as cardinal from 1953 to 1958.
The shield of the coat of arms is divided into tow areas. The upper area contains the winged lion which is the symbol of the City of Veniceas well as St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice. In front of the lion is an open book with the Latin phrase PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS (Peace unto you, Mark, my Evangelist). The lower part contains a tower between two fleurs-de-lis.
Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was ordained a priest on August 10, 1904 and was elevated to the position of cardinal by Pope Pius XII January 12, 1953. He held the previous positions of: Titular Archbishop of Areopolis (1925–34), Official to Bulgaria (1925–31), Apostolic Delegate to Bulgaria (1931–34), Titular Archbishop of Mesembria (1934–53), Apostolic Delegate to Turkey (1934–44), Apostolic Delegate to Greece (1934–44), Apostolic Nuncio to France (1944–53), Cardinal-Priest of Santa Prisca (1953–58), and Patriarch of Venice (1953–58).
