A little bit of a fairly hard climb, then a very nice 360 view. Un petit peu de montée assez dure, puis très belle vue en 360.

What is Mont Gerbier de Jonc?

The Mont Gerbier de Jonc is a phonolitic protuberance dated 7 million years ago.
The site has been classified since 1933.
The origin and etymology of Mont Gerbier de Jonc comes from the word "Jugum", the mountain.
At its base, a basaltic flow resting on the crystalline base. In addition to its particular haystack shape and its extraordinary flora and fauna, Mont Gerbier de Jonc is above all the symbol of the sources of the Loire.

Mont Gerbier de Jonc is a juice from the Monts d'Ardèche: the juices are from ancient volcanoes whose very thick lava, which they released has cooled without having time to flow.
As it crystallized, it turned into a rock called a phonolith and used for slate roofs (example: Ferme de Bourlatier 3 km away). The phonolith is also used today for music on lithophone.

Les Sources de la Loire: the birth of a Royal River
It is from its multiple sources that this river begins its long journey to the Ocean. It is their confluence a few kilometers below that will give birth to the largest river in France. From the foot of Mont Gerbier de Jonc to the Nantes estuary, this river runs: 1,012 km.
Its course begins in the Massif Central and receives tributaries such as Arroux, Allier, Cher, Indre, Vienne and Sarthe.
Like a central artery, the Loire therefore crosses France and ends its course in the Atlantic via a wide and long estuary after Nantes. Etymologically, the Celtic origin of this river name alludes to the doubtful purity of their water. Thus, it is the Celtic word "Liga" (lie, in the sense of "cloudy water", mud, silt, sediment ...) which gave it its name.

There are three "official" sources of the Loire and are all located at the foot of Mont Gerbier de Jonc. The presence of these three sources is due to the fact that under Mount Gerbier there is a water table (from the Greek "Phréas": well) and the water thus comes out of the earth in several places, they meet to form the Loire.

There are 3 Sources of the Loire:
- The Geographic Source flows into a stone tank at the entrance to the stable, recently renovated as a Lauze roof.
- The authentic source is no longer an old monument erected in 1938 by the Touring Club de France, Symbol of the Source of the Loire.
- The real source (cadastral plan n ° 87). It flows in a natural environment and comes out of the earth in a meadow. A slab bears the inscription "Here begins my long course towards the Ocean ...", with a private pool below.

Le Mont Gerbier de Jonc c'est quoi?

Le Mont Gerbier de Jonc est une protubérance phonolitique datée de 7 Millions d´années.
Le site est classé depuis 1933.
L´origine et l´étymologie du Mont Gerbier de Jonc vient du mot "Jugum", la montagne.
À sa base, une coulée basaltique reposant sur le socle cristallin. En sus de sa forme particulière en meule de foin et son extraordinaire faune et flore, le Mont Gerbier de Jonc est avant tout le symbole des sources de la Loire.

Le Mont Gerbier de Jonc est un suc des Monts d’Ardèche : les sucs sont d’anciens volcans dont la lave très épaisse, qu’ils libérèrent a refroidi sans avoir le temps de s’écouler.
En cristallisant, elle s’est transformée en roche appelée phonolithe et utilisée pour les toits de lauzes (exemple : la Ferme de Bourlatier à 3 km). La phonolithe est également utilisée de nos jours pour la musique sur lithophone.

Les Sources de la Loire : la naissance d'un Fleuve Royal
C’est à partir de ses multiples sources que ce fleuve commence son long voyage jusqu’à l’Océan. C’est leur confluence quelques kilometres plus bas qui va donner naissance au plus grand fleuve de France. Du pied du Mont Gerbier de Jonc jusqu’à l’estuaire de Nantes,ce fleuve parcourt : 1 012 km.
Sa course débute dans le Massif Central et reçoit des affluents tels que l´Arroux, l´Allier, le Cher, l´Indre, la Vienne et la Sarthe.
Comme une artère centrale, la Loire traverse donc la France et finit sa course dans l´Atlantique par l´intermédiaire d’un large et long estuaire après Nantes. Etymologiquement, l´origine celtique de ce nom de fleuve fait allusion à la pureté douteuse de leur eau. Ainsi, c’est le mot celtique "Liga" (lie, dans le sens d´"eau trouble", boue, limon, sédiment ...) qui lui a donné son nom.

Les Sources "officielles" de la Loire sont au nombre de trois et sont toutes situées au pied du Mont Gerbier de Jonc. La présence de ces trois sources est due au fait que sous le Mont Gerbier se trouve une nappe phréatique (du grec "Phréas" : puit) et l’eau sort ainsi de terre en plusieurs endroit, elles se rejoignent pour former La Loire.

Il existe 3 Sources de la Loire :
- La Source géographique coule dans un bac en pierre à l’entrée de l’étable, récemment rénovée en toit de Lauze.
- La source authentique est plus un monument ancien érigé en 1938 par le Touring Club de France, Symbole de la Source de la Loire.
- La source véritable (plan cadastral n° 87). Elle coule dans un environnement naturel et sort de terre dans un pré. Une lauze porte l´inscription "Ici commence ma longue course vers l´Océan ...", avec un bassin privé en contrebas.
