Steinahellir is a cave, about 6 meters wide and four meters high. The cave is approx. 15 meters deep and grows higher and wider backwards.
Various plants grow in the cave, such as ferns and mosses.
It is believed to be a natural cave, which was later enlarged by man to make it more habitable. In the period 1818-1905, the cave was the area's parliamentary assembly point, at that time it was closed by a wooden wall.
There are several legends and stories related to the cave. For example, picking a fern means misfortune. It once tried a farmer, and soon after, one of his cows fell from a mountain and died.
