Deze waterput dateert uit de vijftiende eeuw en hij vervulde lange tijd een belangrijke rol voor de inwoners van het oude vissers- en landbouwstadje Goedereede. Hier kwamen zij het heldere 'wellewaeter' (drinkwater) halen. Tot diep in de twintigste eeuw, nadat iedereen was aangesloten aan de waterleiding, is er veel gebruik gemaakt van de waterput.
De put was in die tijd onderdeel van een gasthuis in de oude binnenstad van Goedereede (in de middeleeuwen was een gasthuis een instelling voor de nachtelijke opvang van daklozen. De gasten aan wie een slaapplaats werd geboden varieerden van landlopers tot pelgrims).
Het gasthuis was een van de weinige gebouwen die de grote stadsbrand van het jaar 1482 overleefden. Mogelijk is juist de aanwezigheid van de waterput hier de reden voor geweest. De kans bestaat dat het water uit deze bron een belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld bij het bestrijden van de enorme brand.
Het gasthuis kwam niet onbeschadigd uit de vuurzee, maar heeft er nog eeuwen gestaan. Een gedeelte heeft zelfs tot voor kort nog dienst gedaan als opslagplaats van de gemeente voor o.a. straatkeien.
Inmiddels is alles dat doet herinneren aan het gasthuis afgebroken en heeft plaats moeten maken voor woonhuizen. De waterput staat er echter nog steeds en maakt, hoewel afgesloten en niet langer in gebruik, actief deel uit van het straatbeeld. Een informatiebordje aan de gevel doet melding van de historische waarde van deze plek.

This well dates from the fifteenth century and for a long time it played an important role for the inhabitants of the old fishing and agricultural town of Goedereede. Here they came to get the clear 'wellewaeter' (drinking water). Until well into the twentieth century, after everyone was connected to the water supply, much use was made of the well.
At that time, the well was part of a guesthouse in the old town of Goedereede (in the Middle Ages, a guesthouse was an institution for the nighttime shelter of the homeless. The guests who were offered a place to sleep varied from vagrants to pilgrims).
The guesthouse was one of the few buildings to survive the great city fire of 1482. The presence of the well may have been the reason for this. Chances are the water from this well played an important role in fighting the massive fire.
The guesthouse did not emerge undamaged from the conflagration, but has stood there for centuries. Until recently, some of them even served as a warehouse for the municipality for, among other things, cobblestones.
In the meantime, everything that reminds us of the guesthouse has been demolished and has had to make way for houses. However, the well is still there and, although closed and no longer in use, it is still an active part of the street scene. An information sign on the facade mentions the historical value of this place.
