The line of the Greenwich Meridian was marked in 1984 where it crosses this main road in the northern part of the London Borough of Lewisham. The marker is by the junction of Lee High Road with Halley Gardens, the latter named after Edward Halley, former Astronomer Royal. One pavement slab has the words GREENWICH and MERIDIAN, above and below a very narrow line. It is angled so that the line more-or-less corresponds with the line of the Meridian. The second slab has the following rather poignant wording:

“The adjacent stone was laid by the Worshipful the Mayor of Lewisham, Councillor Les Eytle in Lewisham Anti-Racist Week on 16 November 1984 to commemorate the centenary of the Greenwich Meridian and promote racial harmony throughout the world”.

The seeming double agenda here reminds us that the centenary of the Greenwich Meridian came at a time of high racial tension in Lewisham and that Lewisham Council chose to delay the unveiling of the marker from June to coincide with its Anti Racist Week in September. The inscriptions are now a little worn.
