The building is believed to have been built in the 1790s as a store, operated by Calvin Maynard for a brief period after 1804. Farnum and Seth White's store was here in the 1820s, when it was known for the excessive sales of St. Croix rum. If the second story was added, it was probably by the 1820s, when town meetings were said to have been held here on the second floor. A.S. Gibbs was reported here with a store in 1830. In 1855 Charles H. Cutting owned the property, and in 1870, his widow. Barney Moran lived here in 1898, and his daughters owned the property through the 1940s or '50s.
