From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, the road connecting Chartres to Bourges passed over bridges wrongly called "Chartrains": it seems that the origin is "chastrés" (cut). These are bridges interspersed with raised causeways.
The bridge was built in the 17th century, redeveloped in 1728 and then widened in 1867. It is a stone bridge with 3 arches. The bridge allows the RN10 to cross the Loir north of the city center.
"In Vendôme, another ancient Gallic oppidum, there is also a Pont Chartrain on the Loir, with the name of a destroyed Porte Chartraine and a Faubourg Chartrain. The Pont Chartrain communicated with Chartres the oppidum which was between the high slope called the mountain at Vendôme, and the Loir. On this slope, there was already in the Neolithic period a fortified camp, a promontory barred by a ditch, as at Blois, which was to serve later Gallic chief, and on which site was built, in the Middle Ages, a fortified castle. The road from Chartres to Blois passed through the oppidum and over the bridge. The Porte Chartraine was only built in the Middle Ages. Age and the Faubourg Chartrain even later perhaps; but the carnute memories were still very vivid, just as the commercial relations were still to continue then. "

Du Moyen Âge au XVIIIe siècle, la route reliant Chartres à Bourges passait par des ponts appelés « Chartrains » à tort : il semblerait que l’origine soit « chastrés » (coupés). Il s’agit de ponts entrecoupés de chaussées surélevées.
Le pont a été construit au 17ème siècle, réaménagé en 1728 puis élargit en 1867. C'est un pont en pierre qui possède 3 arches. Le pont permet à la RN10 de franchir le Loir au Nord du centre ville.
"A Vendôme, autre ancien oppidum gaulois, il existe aussi un Pont Chartrain sur le Loir, avec le nom d‘une Porte Chartraine détruite et un Faubourg Chartrain. Le Pont Chartrain faisait communiquer avec Chartres l'oppidum qui se trouvait entre le coteau élevé qu'on appelle la montagne à Vendôme, et le Loir. Sur ce coteau, il existait déjà à l'époque néolithique un camp fortifié, promontoire barré par un fossé, comme à Blois, qui devait servir, plus tard, au chef gaulois, et sur lequel emplacement a été construit, au Moyen-âge, un château-fort. La voie de Chartres à Blois passait dans l'oppidum et sur le pont. La Porte Chartraine n'a été élevée qu'au Moyen-âge et le Faubourg Chartrain encore plus tard peut-être; mais les souvenirs carnutes étaient encore très vivaces, de même que les relations commerciales devaient encore continuer alors."
