This church was created to replace an older temple existent on the low grounds in front, a place named Terreiro da Erva, where floods were regular and damaged the old church year after year.
The architectonic style it's clear Mannerist - or late Renaissance. Note the well sized windows in the front facade and the bell towers, as well as the representations of Saint Francis, Saint Rufina, Saint Justa and a Bishop.
The altar is the highlight of the inside. It was carved in 1718 by the well known master Francisco Machado.
The church is quite attractive and there is something mystic in the controlled neglected aspect of the outside.
