Fondée sur l'ancienne acropole de la ville grecque d'Antipolis. Le château a été construit sur des fondations de l'époque romaine. Il préserve une partie des façades de l'édifice romain à une hauteur variant de 3 à 5 mètres. Cette construction doit dater du 1er siècle après JC. J.-C.
La ville d'Antibes a appartenu à la famille de Grasse jusqu'au 13ème siècle avant d'appartenir entièrement aux évêques d'Antibes puis de Grasse.
La tour du château a été construite à la fin du XIe siècle comme celle de Cannes. Il est un témoin du castrum Antipolitani. Il a une section carrée de 6,50 m sur le côté et une hauteur de 25 m. On retrouve à la base de la tour des pierres taillées issues de monuments romains. La porte d'origine était surmontée d'un linteau monolithique qui supportait un tympan et un arc de décharge semi-circulaire. Comme tous les donjons romans, la porte est située en hauteur pour permettre l'accès à la salle du premier étage uniquement par une échelle coulissante. La chambre du rez-de-chaussée était aveugle et accessible par une ouverture au premier étage. On ne pouvait pas accéder au deuxième étage par un escalier sur des corbeaux longeant les murs.
Le château Grimaldi est occupé à partir de 1385 par une branche de la famille génoise de Grimaldi. Le château actuel a été construit au 15ème siècle. Il a été modifié au 17ème siècle.
En 1608, le roi Henri IV acquiert ce fief au profit de la couronne de France. Les Grimaldi s'installent dans le château de Cagnes voisin, et leur ancien château d'Antibes devient tour à tour la résidence du gouverneur du roi, la mairie et plus tard une caserne, jusqu'en 1924. L'année suivante, sous la houlette de Romuald Dor de la Souchère, la ville d'Antibes a acheté le château délabré, qui est devenu le musée Grimaldi.

Founded on the ancient acropolis of the Greek city of Antipolis. The castle was built on foundations from the Roman period. It preserves part of the facades of the Roman building to a height varying from 3 to 5 meters. This construction must date from the 1st century AD. J.-C.
The city of Antibes belonged to the family of Grasse until the 13th century before belonging entirely to the bishops of Antibes then of Grasse.
The tower in the castle was built at the end of the 11th century like that of Cannes. He is a witness from the Antipolitani castrum. It has a square section of 6.50 m on the side and a height of 25 m. We find at the base of the tower cut stones from Roman monuments. The original door was surmounted by a monolithic lintel which supported a tympanum and a semicircular discharge arch. Like all Romanesque dungeons, the door is located high to allow access to the room on the first floor only by a sliding ladder. The ground floor room was blind and accessed through an opening in the first floor floor. You could not access the second floor by a staircase on corbels running along the walls.
The Grimaldi castle was occupied from 1385 by a branch of the Genoese family of Grimaldi. The current castle was built in the 15th century. It was modified in the 17th century.
In 1608, King Henri IV acquired this fiefdom for the benefit of the crown of France. The Grimaldis settled in the neighboring Château de Cagnes, and their former Château d'Antibes became in turn the residence of the King's governor, the town hall and later a barracks, until 1924. The following year , under the leadership of Romuald Dor de la Souchère, the town of Antibes bought the dilapidated castle, which became the Grimaldi museum.
