One section of this demonstration garden is a butterfly garden. The butterfly garden was initiated in 2012, and was enhanced in 2016. It is also officially designated as a Monarch Waystation by Monarch Watch.
"Butterflies require two types of plants: host (for the growth cycle) and nectar (a sweet liquid for nourishment). Large flat stones are needed for warmth, shelter must be provided from breezes, and “puddles” available for water."

"In cooperation with the University of Tennessee Ag Research and UT Extension, we develop and maintain an educational demonstration garden on highway 70 N. It is open 7 days a week during daylight hours for self-guided tours. This is now one of three TN State Botanical gardens and has earned several other designations. Many classes are held here during the year and the Kinder Garden for the young ones is also a part of this project."
