HOLLAND — The holiday season has officially begun in downtown Holland, and this year, it was kicked off with a brand new tree.
The 20-foot, pre-lit artificial tree is the result of fundraising throughout the month of October. In total, the city raised $13,750 of its $16,000 goal.
“We didn’t quite hit our goal,” said Marketing Coordinator Kara de Alvare. “But we did raise enough to purchase the tree and cover the cost of installation for this year and part of next year.”
Donations were largely made by prominent Holland figures, organizations and downtown businesses, including $5,000 from GDK Construction, $500 from Mayor Nathan Bocks, $100 from Carolyn Stich Studio, $1,000 from Hops at 84 East, $1,000 from the Holland Area Visitors Bureau and $500 from Horizon Bank of Holland.
“We’re just so grateful for the support of the community,” said de Alvare. “We had so many downtown businesses that donated. The majority of fundraising came from them and we’re really appreciative.”
The tree was installed in GDK Park — located on Eighth Street between Central Avenue and River Avenue — late last week.
Its installation precedes downtown Holland’s first major shopping event: “Shop ’Til You Drop,” which begins Friday, Nov. 13. The weeklong event will feature special promotions and giveaways at participating stores.
