The railway line was a short spur line between Garforth and Castleford that opened in 1878. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1951 and freight in 1969.

The line was purchased in 1983 by the West Yorkshire County Council and resurfaced to form a 'rails to trails' recreational path, the Lines Way.

The line passes through large areas of arable farmland and this bridge was constructed to give access to fields on either side of the line.
