Creation of the association and the museum:

In 1992, the small one-class school in rural areas, Vergné, had only 7 pupils…. Its closure is inevitable…. The mayor of the town, Mr. G. Suire, Mr. J. Combes Inspector of the academy and a team of volunteer and newly retired teachers, decide to transform this small school into a Departmental Museum of the Public School in Charente-Maritime.
The association law 1901, Departmental Museum of the Public School created in 1993, has 120 to 150 members since its inauguration in 1995 .... All the communes of Charente-Maritime were asked to donate the furniture, the documents from the past that could survive in their sheds and their archives, 44 replied. The trailers crisscrossed the department to collect the donations that would constitute the furniture and the documentary fund…. of the museum. A hundred individuals also brought their donations…. And since then, the teams of volunteers, always supported by the municipality, have been working to make it live and prosper…. More than 7000 objects, furniture, books are listed today ...
Recognized and helped by the General Council of Charente-Maritime and the community of communes of Vals de Saintonge, in 2016 it welcomed around 900 students from schools in the department and even from neighboring departments and 800 visitors who came with family or groups ... .

En 1992, la petite école à classe unique en milieu rural, de Vergné, ne compte plus que 7 élèves…. Sa fermeture est inévitable…. Le maire de la commune, M. G.Suire, M. J.Combes Inspecteur d’académie et une équipe d’instituteurs bénévoles et nouvellement retraités, décident de transformer cette petite école en Musée Départemental de l’Ecole Publique en Charente-Maritime.
L’association loi 1901, Musée Départemental de l’Ecole Publique créée en 1993, compte de 120 à 150 adhérents depuis l’inauguration en 1995…. Toutes les communes de Charente-Maritime ont été sollicitées pour donner le mobilier, les documents d’autrefois qui pouvaient subsister dans leurs remises, leurs archives, 44 ont répondu. Les remorques ont sillonné le département pour recueillir les dons qui allaient constituer l’ameublement et le fonds documentaire…. du musée. Une centaine de particuliers ont apporté aussi leurs dons …. Et depuis, les équipes de bénévoles, toujours soutenues par la municipalité, s’attachent à le faire vivre et prospérer…. Plus de 7000 objets, meubles, livres sont recensés à l’heure actuelle…
Reconnu et aidé par le Conseil général de Charente-Maritime et la communauté de communes de Vals de Saintonge, il a accueilli en 2016, environ 900 élèves des écoles du département et même des départements limitrophes et 800 visiteurs venus en famille ou en groupe…….
