The main post office in South Hadley was built in 1940 to a simplified Classical Revival style architecture designed by West Springfield architect Leon Pernice. It deviated from the usual government architecture of the time when post office is small towns were built in a simple style so that they could be rapidly built.

The one story, isosceles trapezoid shaped, building with a two-tiered flat roof is made of red brick with limestone trim. The façade is three bays wide with a series of four square columns supporting a portico entrance which is reached by a set of three steps. The portico is illuminated by a hanging lamp. The central entrance is flanked by a pair of tall rectangular windows. Above the entrance is the inscription SOUTH HADLEY/MASSACHUSETTS in raised bronze letters. The original building was five bays wide with a rectangular window in each bay. A large addition at the rear was added in 1968.
