« L'Immaculée Conception est la conception de la Vierge Marie « sans tache », c'est-à-dire exempte du péché originel. Il s'agit d'un dogme de l'Église catholique qui a été proclamé, le 8 décembre 1854 par le pape Pie IX par la bulle Ineffabilis Deus, mais cette croyance existait déjà chez les Pères de l'Église au ive siècle. Elle est souvent confondue par erreur avec la conception virginale de Jésus-Christ, c'est-à-dire le dogme de l'Incarnation, mais elle ne concerne que la conception de Marie elle-même.

L'Immaculée Conception est célébrée par l'Église catholique le 8 décembre lors de la fête qui lui est dédiée. Il s'agit d'une fête de précepte.

Si l'Église orthodoxe célèbre la fête de la Conception de Marie et nomme Marie « l'Immaculée », elle ne reconnaît cependant pas ce dogme de l'Immaculée Conception, de même que les protestants ou les autres Églises chrétiennes, qui y voient un théologoumène.

De très nombreuses églises de par le monde sont dédiées à l'Immaculée Conception. Dans l'art, en peinture comme en sculpture, l'Immaculée Conception est l'objet d'une iconographie importante. »

"The Immaculate Conception is a dogma of the Catholic Church which states that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception. It proved highly controversial in the Middle Ages, but was revived in the 19th century and was adopted as Church dogma when Pope Pius IX promulgated Ineffabilis Deus in 1854; this had the overwhelming support of the Church's hierarchy, although a few, including the Archbishop of Paris, warned that the Immaculate Conception is not stated in the New Testament and cannot be deduced from it.[4] Protestants overwhelmingly rejected Ineffabilis Deus as an exercise in papal power and the doctrine itself as without foundation in Scripture, and Eastern Orthodoxy, although it reveres Mary in its liturgy, called on the Roman church to return to the faith of the early centuries. The iconography of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception shows her standing, with arms outspread or hands clasped in prayer, and her feast day is 8 December.
