From the Find A Grave website Memorial #19067:
Civil War Union Brevet Major General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as Colonel and commander of the 116th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, which was part of the famed "Irish Brigade". Took part in the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services". Was also brevetted Major General, US Volunteers on the same date for "gallant and meritorious services in the Battle of Boydton Plank Road, Va., October 27, 1864". However, the Major General brevet was not confirmed until February 20, 1869 by the Senate. It was the last Brevet Major General commissioned for Civil War services. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Chancellorsville (May 3-4, 1863) while Major of the 116th PA. His citation reads "In command of the picket line held the enemy in check all night to cover the retreat of the Army". His Medal was issued March 26, 1895. He is interred in an unmarked tomb that gave no indication of either his status as a Brevet General or a CMOH recipient until a plaque for him was installed in 2008.
