Der italienische Maler, Bildhauer, Architekt, Anatom, Mechaniker, Ingenieur und Naturphilosoph Leonardo da Vinci wurde 1452 in Anchiano bei Vinci nahe Florenz geboren. Als Sohn des Notars Piero da Vinci erhielt er eine gute allgemeine Bildung, die seinem Interesse an der Natur im Allgemeinen entgegen kam. 17-jährig wurde Leonardo dann Schüler des Künstlers und Bildhauers Andrea del Verrocchio in Florenz, wo er sich bereits nach wenigen Jahren unter der schützenden Hand von Lorenzo il Magnifico als freier Künstler betätigen konnte. Leonardos Interessen erwiesen sich als sehr vielfältig und waren auch für die Mailänder Herrscherfamilie ein Gewinn. Zu seinen berühmtesten Werken zählen wohl unter anderem "Das letzte Abendmahl" und die "Mona Lisa", aber auch der "vitruviansche Mann" und einige Erfindungen (wie der Fallschirm). 1519 verstarb Leonardo da Vinci in Amboise.

Über das Gebäude
Das heutige Leonardo-da-Vinci-Gymnasium wurde 1903 als Realprogymnasium im Kölner Stadtteil Nippes gegründet. Das Gebäude an der Blücherstraße 15-17 wurde vom städtischen Baurat Friedrich Bolte geplant, ab 1907 erbaut und 1908 eingeweiht. Im zweiten Weltkrieg brannte das Gebäude zweimal aus, wurde aber bereits am Ende des Krieges 1945 wieder aufgebaut. Die neugestaltete Aula wurde 1953 it dem fünfzigjährigen Jubiläum eingeweiht, 1956 kam dann die Sporthalle hinzu. Anfang der 1960er Jahre wurden die Sternwarte und das Planetarium errichtet. Im Februar 2011 wurde das Städtische Gymnasium Köln Nippes in Leonardo-da-Vinci-Gymnasium umbenannt.

About the building
Today's Leonardo-da-Vinci-Gymnasium was founded in 1903 as a Realprogymnasium in the Cologne district of Nippes. The building at Blücherstraße 15-17 was planned by the municipal building officer Friedrich Bolte, built from 1907 and inaugurated in 1908. The building burned down twice during the Second World War, but was rebuilt at the end of the war in 1945. The redesigned auditorium was inaugurated in 1953 for the 50th anniversary, and the sports hall was added in 1956. The observatory and planetarium were built in the early 1960s. In February 2011, the municipal high school in Cologne Nippes was renamed the Leonardo da Vinci high school.
