The U.S.S. Ingraham (DD-444), a Gleaves-class destroyer, was escorting a convoy crossing the North Atlantic. On the night of August 22, 1944, while in heavy fog, the ship collided with the oil tanker Chemung off the coast of Nova Scotia. The U.S.S Ingraham sank as the depth charges she was carrying exploded. Only 11 men survived the collision.
