On 6 October, 1868 Sergeant McCabe accompanied by Constable Hugh McManus was searching an area near the Queensland border for bushrangers Frank Pearson (Captain Starlight) and Charles Rutherford. They stopped for supplies at Shearer's Inn, Enngonia when the two bushrangers appeared. During the shoot-out Sergeant McCabe was shot in the chest and despite the efforts of a doctor died from his injuries 4 weeks later.
