According to Renton Downtown's website, "Interested artists will be permitted to “adopt” fire hydrants within the South Renton neighborhood and create artistic designs for them."

The artists selected to participate receive $300 per hydrant to cover the cost of materials, supplies and design fees.

The program was originally limited to 20 hydrants, but has proven so popular that the limit has been removed.
