Back in the day a fairly prosperous settler might be able to purchase a windmill head and set it on a wooden tower like this one, to pull water from deep underground for thirsty people and horses and cattle and crops. This wood-tower windmill is typical of what one might have seen throughout the Texas Panhandle a century ago. It is on display behind the one-room schoolhouse on the grounds of the Armstrong Historical Museum in Claude.
