In 1986, Israel issued a set of three stamps and a souvenir sheet in conjunction with Ameripex 86, an international philatelic exhibition held in Chicago, IL. Many countries’ postal administrations participated in this event and issued corresponding postage stamps as well. Typically, the subject matter of these postal issues emphasized that country’s ties to the United States. In Israel’s case, the stamps showed various Jewish institutes of higher education located in America.

According to their website, the Jewish Theological Seminary was established by Dr. Sabato Morais and Dr. H. Pereira Mendes, two distinguished rabbis, in order to preserve the knowledge and practice of historical Judaism. It has been described as the academic and spiritual center of Conservative Judaism, providing both graduate and undergraduate degrees as well as housing a world-class library.

The school is located on the upper west side of Manhattan, right next to Columbia University and a joint program offering dual degrees with Columbia is available. The stamp shows the seminary’s main building and a detail of the main entrance.
