Fado is a traditional way of singing in Portuguese. Not much is known about the roots of Fado, besides the fact that it was developed in Lisbon and grew amongst the lowest ranks of the society in the 19th century. From there it was brought to Coimbra by the University students. In this town there was an evolution and a specific style became clearly different. This museum is dedicated to this evolution and to the history of Fado from Coimbra.
It's organically part of the City's museum and it's hosted in a historical building, a small defensive tower - Torre do Anto - which was part of the medieval defense network and was included in the old walls of the town. It was also home of one of the nationwide poets, António Nobre (1867–1900)
It was inaugurated in March 2013.
