The management of the Hotusa group has decided to close the Chapel of San Caralampio, better known as the Chapel of the Shells of A Toxa, to all kinds of religious acts. The closure will continue "until the chapel is properly cleaned up," according to the poster with which the parish priest of O Grove, Antonio Varela, announced to the faithful the suspension of the masses planned there. According to the same poster, "the current state of the chapel does not offer the necessary conditions, including security ones, for dignified celebrations - Sunday Eucharist, weddings ...". In particular, the problems seem to be concentrated in the roof of the building, which has numerous deficiencies and leaks.
DiscomfortThis situation has caused some discomfort among the faithful of O Grove, who see in the deterioration of the chapel, one of the best-known images of the town, a symbol of the decline of the island as a whole, which in its day was a tourist reference throughout Spain, and where they now see everything "very neglected." The faithful assure that the parish priest "had planned to celebrate his first homily this Sunday, May 17, with the limitations of capacity, separation and corresponding hygiene."
