Before flood control tamed the Galena River, flooding was a major issue for this town. The Galena River was actually deep enough to allow Mississippi River boats to dock even though the town is quite a ways inland. The original picture was taken in 1909 - Galena River Flood on Hill Street near Main Street in Galena, Ill. - galpho0334. Picture is owned by the Galena Public Library District.

As you can tell, the water is knee deep and the river is a good tenth of a mile away. There is a good reason why the town is still protected by flood gates.
