"One of the oldest parts of the building is the facade, characteristic of the Saintonge Romanesque style. Wide of a little over twelve meters, it is divided into three horizontal registers. The lower part houses a portal with four arches decorated with geometric and plant motifs, apart from the upper arch where the signs of the zodiac are represented, accompanied by the works of each month.
We can thus notice:
Aquarius: a seated figure symbolizes winter and the expectation of nature awakening.
Pisces: a seated man warms himself by a fire.
Aries: a man pruning trees.
Taurus: a woman cultivates fields.
Gemini: mutilated sculpture.
Cancer (shown here as a turtle, followed by a scallop): a man reaps.
Leo: a woman washes the laundry.
Virgo: a man threshes the wheat with a plague.
Balance: a winegrower is harvesting.
Sagittarius (represented here in the form of a cat): a man cuts down acorns.
Scorpion: A character feeds a pig.
Capricorn: a man at the table.
It is worth noting the reversal between Sagittarius and Scorpio, an error that cannot be explained.
Between the turtle symbolizing Cancer (probably a signature of a Companion of the Tour de France, just like Sagittarius represented by a cat) and the activity of the month of the year (a man harvesting), is interspersed a shell Saint-Jacques, which indicates that the church could be used as relay on the way of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle; as it passes away from Cognac.
