[FR] A l’époque gallo-romaine, Montans devient l'un des principaux centres de production de céramiques sigillées de l’Empire romain. Les techniques de fabrication et de cuisson de cette céramique de grande qualité à la couleur rouge caractéristique seront introduites à Montans par des potiers venus d’Italie et les sigillées seront produites de façon industrielle et exportées principalement sur la façade atlantique, du Royaume-Uni au Nord de l'Espagne. Véritable vecteur de romanité, la céramique sigillée de Montans sera fabriquée deux siècles durant au côté de céramiques communes, dont les amphores destinées au stockage et au transport par voie fluviale des vins produits localement, et de matériaux de construction en terre cuite (tuiles, briques,…).
[EN] During the Gallo-Roman era, Montans became one of the principal centers of Terra Sigil!ata ceramic production within the Roman Empire. The techniques of the high quality, red colored pottery manufacture and firing were brought to Montans by potters from italy and the Sigillata was industrially produced and exported principally along the Atlantic coast, from the United Kingdom to the north of Spain. Veritable conveyor of Roman culture, the Sigillata ceramics of Montans would be manufactured for two centuries side by side with common ceramics, such as amphoras used to hold and transport by water the locally produced wine, and construction materials in terra cotta (roof tiles, bricks, ...)
