This description of Votive XXXIV is taken from a Newspaper article about the art legacy of Muriel and Phillip Berman:

"It's 1987, and Team Berman is erecting yet another strikingly large, strikingly abstract sculpture in Allentown's Cedar Creek Park. Muriel and Phil are enjoying Ernest Shaw's "Votive XXXIV," a 30-foot-high tower of rusty-steel geometric forms in a field by Parkway Boulevard and 31st Street. It joins an assortment of other Berman-donated jaw-droppers, including Paul Sisko's 56-square-foot, tilted steel cube bisected by a screw.

The Bermans' pleasure is interrupted by a shout of "It's junk!" Phil Berman, never one to ignore the charge that he's an impresario of three-dimensional graffiti, invites the critical pedestrian to meet the artist. Then he and Shaw, a former psychiatrist, explain the method behind their madness.

The sculpture's circles and rectangles, they say, connect earth to sky, just like a totem pole. Rusting is a natural process, as natural as trees shedding leaves. A challenging sculpture can force viewers to circle it; it can make them see a park differently, more completely, even more clearly."
