The Main Great Barrington Post Office is a unique example of McAdoo's Classification System for Federal Buildings Class C Construction.

Federal description of Class C construction see p.24: link

Definition: Buildings that include a post office of the second class with receipts of $15,000 or over, and of the first class to $60,000 receipts; valuation of surrounding property that of a second-class city.

Character of building: Brick facing with stone or terra-cotta trimmings; fireproof floors; non-fireproof roof; frames, sashes, and doors wood; interior finish to exclude the more expensive woods and marbles; the latter used only where sanitary conditions demand; public spaces restricted to very simple forms of ornament.

Architect Lorimer Rich, starting with a standard floor plan, created this unusual Colonial-Classical Revival design for the mid 1930's. The post office was constructed in 1936 by D. A. Sullivan & Sons.

The square, one story, red brick building has a low hip roof with a central metal roof that closes off the original skylight. The facade contains four Tuscan columns supporting the pediment over a portico entrance. A pair of multi-paned windows flank the central entrance and there is a rectangular multi-paned windows above the entrance. On brick area on either side of the entrance is a large multi-paned window. The sides are five bays wide. Each bay has a window matching the front windows.

Visit Instructions:
To post a log to an existing U.S. Post Office waymark, you will need to post a picture of the front of the building, with the name of the post office in the background if that is possible.

A description of your Post Office is required, such as when it was built, history, outstanding or unique features, population of the city or town, just do a quick internet search and find an interesting bit of information about the city or town and add it to the long description, to make it more interesting. Even just adding in the population of the area can give others an idea of how many people this post office serves. This description should be at least three sentences.

If your Post Office has any unusual or unique features that you feel others would enjoy viewing, additional pictures are always welcome.
Including your gps device in the picture is not necessary, but wouldn't be cause for disapproval, as long as all other details of your log are acceptable.
