[EN] A monastic community was at the origin of the development of the city beginning in the 10th century. It was organized around the abbey church on the banks of the Tarn river and on the hill of the Hom castle. The abbey became rich from donations and colleciton of fees; it welcomed the pilgrims of Compostella and created the Saint James hospital along the docks in the 13th century.

The abbey was at the origin of the development of the vineyards which had been exporting wine throughout Europe since the Gallo-Roman era.
