Saint-Lô and its ramparts
Capital of the Horse, Saint-Lô is located in the heart of the Cotentin peninsula. The prefectural city is surrounded by ramparts where stands the "cathedral" Notre Dame. A city that combines memory, present and future. Saint-Lô is proud of its roots. They date back to the time of the Vikings, passing by Bishop Lô and the testimony of a whole economic life around the Vire.

Today, Saint-Lô is meeting the challenges of history by resolutely turning towards tomorrow while promoting a heritage that holds many surprises.

The walls
A natural schist promontory, cut by the valleys of Torteron, Dollée and Vire, the rock makes it possible to control this strategic meeting point of several roads and a navigable river. Charlemagne, when he came to the region in the year 800, is credited with the first fortifications to protect the city from Norman invasions.

Capitale du Cheval, Saint-Lô se situe au cœur de la presqu’île du Cotentin. La cité préfectorale est entourée de remparts où s´élève la « cathédrale » Notre Dame. Une ville qui conjugue mémoire, présent et avenir. Saint-Lô est fière de ses racines. Elles remontent au temps des vikings, en passant par l´évêque Lô et le témoignage de toute une vie économique autour de la Vire.

Les remparts
Promontoire naturel de schiste, découpé par les vallées du Torteron, de la Dollée et de la Vire, le rocher permet de contrôler ce point de rencontre stratégique de plusieurs routes et d'une rivière navigable. On attribue à Charlemagne, lors de sa venue dans la région en l'An 800, les premières fortifications pour protéger la ville des invasions normandes.
