The history of Umbarger goes back to the 1880s when rancher S. G. Umbarger purchased a large plot of land here from the railroad that owned it. The town grew as German and Swiss Catholics settled here, establishing two Catholic churches. One of these was Saint Mary's Catholic Church and the associated cemetery. Prius Friemel, who led German Catholics to this area in 1902, is interred here along with many of his family members; there are about forty Friemels listed here.

Pius Friemel (and his two concurrent wives) had eleven children; Joseph John Friemel was the sixth.
