July 1877, "Buffalo Soldiers" of Co. A, 10th Cavalry, led by Capt. Nolan traveled throught this area tracking raiding Comanche. The soldiers were not prepared for the drought conditions as they crossed Hockley and Cochran Counties. Quanah Parker, who was with the Indians said he watched the soldiers from a distance, and repeatedly lead them away from water. As a result of being unprepared, 4 soldiers died.
