The "Bamberger Elle" is defined with two iron nails, called "Löwenköpfe", situated right of the "Gnadenpforte", an entrance to the Bamberg Cathedral. Next to it is the "Bamberger Fuss" (feet), a sgrafitto etched in the stone.
This Bamberg Elle (cubit) was 67 centimeters long, the foot a length of 26.8 centimeters. A cubit was exactly 2.5 feet. Allegedly the latter was the foot measurement of the holy Kunigunde, which consequently would have been almost size 44, which is a bit unlikely for a woman.
The Bamberg Elle and the Bamberg Foot were valid everywhere in the Principality of Bamberg and are the oldest medieval units of measurement in Europe. An example of Bamberg's Elle can still be found today on the market square in the town of Zeil am Main.
