Governor Joe
Joseph Paw-ne-no-pa-she
Died Jan. 18, 1883 - Aged 50 years
Governor of the Great and Little Osages. "Governor Joe" negotiated with the Cherokees and the U.S. Government for the purchase of what is now Osage Reservation. After a treaty of July 19, 1866 between the Cherokees and the Government, the Osages moved to their new home. This land was paid for with funds from the sale of land held by the Osages in Kansas. Final deed was given by the Cherokee Nation June 14, 1883.
