The “Heroes Are Everywhere” mural honors the the people who have come together during the COVID-19 pandemic to care of each other, especially medical personnel. The mural was created by Westfield ArtWorks, a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers. The lead artist was Shannon Chiba. The mural was dedicated on August 22, 2020.
The mural is painted on six surfaces: the two exterior walls on the
Taylor Avenue side, the two exterior walls of the Hedges Avenue side and the north and south walls of the tunnel.
South side of Taylor Avenue entrance depicts a woman health care worker wearing scrubs, a hair net, and a facial mask. She has a stethoscope draped over her shoulders. To her right is a health care worker in full PPE examining a patient. To her left is a couple embracing in front of a doorway.
North side of Taylor Avenue entrance depicts a farm scene with a man and a woman packing farm produce in a shopping cart. It is signed and dated by Shannon Chiba.
The south interior wall has a large heart as its central motif. To the right of the heart a man holds a young girl on his shoulders. Both are holding the arms up at a 90 degree angle. The the left of the heart a man is reaching out to a woman who is struggling to climb a hill.
The north interior wall has two women bicyclist riding on the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail. The women to the right is giving the victory salute with her raised left hand.
The south side of Hedges Avenue entrance depicts an array of various flowers.
The north side of Hedges Avenue entrance depicts the dual bridges, on Route 20, over the Westfield River that are part of the Great River Project.
