"The Mataguerre tower is the last fortification of the medieval enclosure of the village of Puy Saint-Front, an urban core that was to become the city center of Périgueux, consisting of twenty-eight towers and twelve gates, saved from its destruction in 1876 by the Historical and Archaeological Society of Périgord, the Mataguerre Tower marks the entrance to the protected area.

It was completely rebuilt in the 15th century. From 1622 to 1831, it served as a warehouse for powder. Dilapidated, its conical roof was removed in 1807.

Built on the rock, it is circular in shape, with a more flared base than the main body. It is crowned with machicolations and includes archers.

This 17.60 m high round tower, on a polygonal base, provided control of the corner of the medieval rampart. The building, classified as a historic monument in 1840, owned by the city, can be visited with access to the rampart walk which offers an exceptional panorama. "
