D. januar 1921 begyndte værket at producere strøm.

The Tange Power Station was built after the First World War in the years 1918 to 1920. On January 8, 1921, the power station began to produce electricity. At that time, the station could cover 1/4 of Jutland's entire electricity consumption. Today, the production covers 3000 households.

Behind Tangeværket is the 13 km long artificial Tange Lake, which is Denmark's largest artificial lake. The lake has a catchment area of 1,790 km2 and a surface area of 540 km2. Tange Lake receives water from Gudenåen, Borre Å and Tange Å. After the passage through Tangeværket, the water flows via Gudenåen out to Randers Inlet.

When daming up the lake 13 km of the river Gudenåen was flooded. The plantation and buildings from six farms and 20 houses were removed to ensure good conditions for fishing in the lake.

The supply channel to the plant is 340 meters long and 50 meters wide.
The water from the dammed lake flows through three double Francis turbines. The turbines still pull the original generators.
