Erected in homage to the Free French and the Resistance fighters from within, the new monument will be located at the Batterie du Roc.

A cross of Lorraine through which we can see the islands of Jersey and Guernsey. This is one of the requirements that Marc Dupard, in charge of creating the future monument, had set for himself: "I would like to bring out the shape of a mast with two boat sails", explains the internationally renowned artist. The boats in question: La Gloire à Dieu and La Mouette, the two fishing boats on which young volunteers left Granville, heading for the Channel Islands, to join the Free French Forces, between June 25 and 28 1940.

Made of Corten steel, the monument is erected in homage to the Free French and the Resistance fighters from within. Michel Leblanc, of the Fondation de la france libre, helped to list some of the more than 150 names appearing there: “We have been working on it for three years. Unfortunately, we cannot be exhaustive because we have only listed all those for whom we have had formal proof that they could receive the Resistance Volunteer Combatant's Card. "

36 names of free Frenchmen are therefore engraved on a first desk and 130 names of Resistance fighters, having obeyed the orders of Maurice Marland, on a second. "This is just a start for recognition of the Channel-wide Resistance," he announced.

In all, 40,000 € will have been necessary for its realization, with a subsidy from the Department to the tune of 1,100 €. While in the future commemorations will take place around this new monument, the old one, located at the French-Free roundabout, will be kept in place.

On Tuesday, July 23, the inauguration will take place at 11 a.m. at the Batterie du Roc, in the presence, in particular, of James Duvernay, United States Consul.

Une croix de Lorraine à travers laquelle on peut voir les îles de Jersey et Guernesey. C’est une des exigences que s’était fixé Marc Dupard, en charge de la réalisation du futur monument : « Je souhaite en faire ressortir une forme de mât avec deux voiles de bateaux », explique l’artiste, internationalement connu. Les bateaux en question : La Gloire à Dieu et La Mouette, les deux embarcations de pêche sur lesquelles de jeunes volontaires sont partis de Granville, en direction des îles anglo-normandes, pour rejoindre les Forces françaises libres, entre le 25 et le 28 juin 1940.

Réalisé en acier corten, le monument est érigé en hommage aux Français libres et aux Résistants de l’intérieur. Michel Leblanc, de la Fondation de la france libre, a contribué à répertorier une partie des plus de 150 noms y figurant : « Cela fait trois ans que nous travaillons dessus. On ne peut, malheureusement, pas être exhaustif parce que nous n’avons inscrit que tous ceux pour lesquels nous avons eu les preuves formelles qu’ils pouvaient recevoir la carte du combattant volontaire de la Résistance. »

Ce sont donc 36 noms de Français libres qui sont gravés sur un premier pupitre et 130 noms de Résistants, ayant obéi aux ordres de Maurice Marland, sur un deuxième. « Ce n’est qu’un départ pour la reconnaissance de la Résistance à l’échelle de la Manche », annonce-t-il.

En tout, 40 000 € auront été nécessaires à sa réalisation, avec une subvention du Département à hauteur de 1 100 €. Si, à l’avenir, les commémorations se dérouleront autour de ce nouveau monument, l’ancien, situé au rond-point des Français-Libres, sera maintenu en place.

Mardi 23 juillet, l’inauguration aura lieu à 11 h, à la Batterie du Roc, en présence, notamment, de James Duvernay, consul des États-Unis.
