The Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) was the most powerful solid-fuel rocket ever flown. Two each were used to loft the Space Shuttle into orbit - a total of 135 missions. The failure of one of these boosters led to the loss of
Challenger and the seven lives on board. All but four of these SRBs were recovered and refurbished for future launches; it is claimed that the SRBs used on STS-135, the final shuttle mission, re-used SRB components from 59 prior missions. You can read more on
