Congregationalists of English descent who settled in West Stockbridge and established the congregation in 1774. After meeting in private homes they built the First Congregational Church of West Stockbridge in 1834. The current Congregational Church of West Stockbridge, built in 1882 on the site of the original Greek Revival-style church building which was destroyed by fire.

The church is the best preserved example of Victorian Stick Style architecture in West Stockbridge. It was designed by Charles T. Rathbun of Pittsfield, with the help of a local builder, Billy H. Hatch of Great Barrington. The one and a half story high, clapboard covered, wood frame structure is built in the shape of a cross. It has a cross-gabled roof covered with asphalt shingles. A belfry with a pyramidal roof rises above the west facing wing.

The west facing side of the church includes the west wing which is flanked by a pair of entrances that lead into the north and south wings. Each entrance has a set of steps leading up to a portico with a gabled roof and a double set of red doors. The main entrance is in the south wing. The west wing has a large triple stained glass window on the lower level and a pair of small rectangular windows on the upper level. A tall brick chimney rises from the south side of the roof. Larger, similar, triple stained glass windows flanked with tall single windows are located on the north and south wings. The woodwork is characteristic of the Stick style with patterned decorative shingles beneath all the stained glass windows.

The Congregational Church of West Stockbridge, MA is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
