E. T. A. Hoffmann spent almost five years of his life, from September 1, 1808 to April 21, 1813, in Bamberg. On May 1, 1809, he moved into the two top floors of the house at Zinkenwörth No. 50 (today Schillerplatz 26). A commemorative plaque was placed here in 1908 and on April 6, 1930 a loose group of Hoffmann friends opened a museum, today's E.T.A. Hoffmann House. During a Gau culture week and with the help of the Bamberg poets' circle, the E.T.A. Hoffmann Society founded.

The museum was set up under the theme of E. T. A. Hoffmann in Bamberg. To this end, the founder, the psychologist and publisher Wilhelm Ament, created his own collections (first and other editions, literature on E. T. A. Hoffmann and his work, autographs, graphics and photos). However, these were entrusted to the Bamberg State Library in 1958 and 1961. Afterwards they wanted to furnish the museum like in Hoffmann's time; however, there were neither documents nor original equipment.

Today the museum extends to the whole house (only about 3.5 meters wide on the street front) including the rear building and garden. It was until 2019 by the E.T.A. Hoffmann-Gesellschaft with the support of the city of Bamberg looked after and occasionally funded by state institutions, companies, foundations and sponsors. With a cooperation agreement dated February 18, 2020, the city of Bamberg took over the sponsorship of the E.T.A. Hoffmann House with retroactive effect from January 1, 2020. The cultural office of the city of Bamberg is responsible for the operation. The property is owned by the Bamberg World Heritage Foundation.
