Derby's Fire Station 81 is located at 715 E. Madison, at the corner of N. Woodlawn. The vehicle bays face east on Woodlawn. This is a one-story brick building with a metal-covered hip roof. The large windows and vehicles bays are surrounded with concrete edging and have arched tops.

The main entrance faces north on Madison. At the northeast corner is a two-story brick entry tower with large glass windows. The grounds on the north contain a bronze sculpture titled "Answering the Alarm". Walkways wander through beautiful flower gardens.

Derby had a volunteer fire department for 50 years before becoming a full-time unit in 2005. Station #82 on Rock Road opened in 2002. This #81 Station opened in July 2019. Besides the Fire Chief and Deputy Chief, they operate with 17 full-time firefighters, plus 8 part-time and 20 volunteers.
