"How can you not fish? Since when?" Few in Baiona give credit to the new signs that prohibit sport fishing on the pier. Portos placed them on the 15th to recall a regulation that has been in force for years at the venue, although almost none of the cane fans have complied with it. The posters command respect to some, who turn around with their gear as soon as they see it, and cause indifference to others, who are placed as always in their place.
The fishing port has always been a place frequented by sport fishermen, residents and visitors, especially in summer. No problems of coexistence with professional sailors. "This activity does not bother us at all," says Susana González, the chief patron of the A Anunciada Fishermen's Association. "I understand that it has been banned for years, but no one was ever fined," he says.
The dock guards have never denounced anyone for deploying their cane in the port. The signage makes it clear to amateur fishermen that they cannot practice their hobby there and now they wonder what will happen if they continue to ignore the regulations. "Home is now going to start fines, we will have to go to another site," some said yesterday in the area.
Others demand the removal of the signage. Like Jacobo Costas Moreda, president of a platform called Gestora por Baiona, who demands that the City Council demand it from the Xunta. "They are cutting a space that the residents of Baiona understand as ours, used by several generations for sport fishing, which is also a tourist attraction."
