Über das Gymnasium
Das alte Gebäude der damals "Städtisches Gymnasium" genannten Schule, in dem jetzt die Sankt-Franziskus-Grundschule befindet, ist zwischen Kentenichstraße, Schützenstraße und der Straße "An der Synagoge" gelegen. Dort absolvierte der 1891 in Brühl geborene und aufgewachsene Künstler und Bildhauer Max Ernst im Jahr 1910 sein Abitur.
Das neue Gebäude des heutigen Max-Ernst-Gymnasiums wurde vom Architekten Peter Busmann geplant und in den Jahren 1962 bis 1965 gebaut, bezogen wurde es dann im März 1966. 1981, fünf Jahre nach dem Tod von Max Ernst, wurde das Gymnasium nach ihm benannt.
Über Max Ernst
Max Ernst, ein bedeutender Maler, Graphiker und Bildhauer wurde am 2. April 1891 in Brühl geboren. Er kam bereits in frühen Jahren durch seinen Vater mit der Kunst in Kontakt und gründete nach dem Studium in Bonn und dem darauf folgenden ersten Weltkrieg in Köln mit Johannes Baargeld und Hans Arp die Kölner Dada-Gruppe. Anfang der Zwanziger wandte er sich den Surrealisten zu und zog nach Paris.
Nach Beginn des zweiten Weltkrieges 1939 war Max Ernst mehrfach interniert und seine Kunst als "entartet" kategorisiert worden, in der Folge floh er 1941 und emigrierte in die Vereinigen Staaten. Ab 1942 beschäftigte sich Max Ernst vermehrt mit Bildhauerei und schuf so viele surrealistische Skulpturen. 1953 kehrt er mit seiner vierten Frau nach Paris in Frankreich zurück und bleibt dort künstlerisch aktiv bis zu seinem Tod am 1. April 1976.

About Max Ernst
Max Ernst, an important painter, graphic artist and sculptor was born on April 2nd, 1891 in Brühl. He came into contact with art through his father at an early age and, after studying in Bonn and the subsequent First World War, founded the Cologne Dada group with Johannes Baargeld and Hans Arp in Cologne. In the early twenties he turned to the surrealists and moved to Paris.
After the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, Max Ernst was interned several times and his art was categorized as "degenerate". As a result, he fled in 1941 and emigrated to the United States. From 1942 onwards, Max Ernst became increasingly involved in creating so many surrealistic sculptures. In 1953 he returned to Paris in France with his fourth wife, where he remained artistically active until his death on April 1st, 1976.
