These white metal door handles resembling bird wings on a central spout are part of a stained glass and wrought iron door leading to the upper floors of Casa Bruno Cuadros.
History -
In 1854, the trader Bruno Cuadros Vidal rented a shop located on the ground floor of an austere group of three houses. His store of umbrellas, parasols, handheld fans and shawls being successful, he gradually acquired the three houses and built a brand new building in 1858. The house and shop were completely remodeled by architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas between 1883 and 1885, a few years before the Barcelona's Universal Exhibition of 1888.
Vilaseca combined the prior style of modernisme with all kinds of architectural elements inspired by other cultures in an eclectic building which amazes everyone who walks along La Rambla. The Casa Bruno Cuadros’s balconies and the top-floor gallery are decorated with Egyptian imagery. The facade features elaborate sgraffito work and stained-glass windows as well as reliefs of umbrellas and hand fans. Orientalist motifs impregnate the outer walls which feature intricate carpentry, enamelled glass and paintings of people taken from Japanese prints.
The building was refurbished in 1980 and now the BBVA Bank has its premises in the beautiful umbrella shop of Barcelona.
